About the competition
What is World Robot Olympiad™?
World Robot Olympiad™ (WRO®) is a global STEAM and robotics competition where student teams design, build, and program robots. Teams take on challenges that develop technical skills, creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving.
The competition is open to students of different ages and can be organized through schools, after-school programs, universities, or independent teams. The goal is not only to compete, but to learn by testing, failing, improving, and trying again.
Learn how to get startedFor everyone
WRO® is for everyone
Students can participate regardless of previous experience. Teams choose an age group, competition category, and technology platform that fits their skills and circumstances.
For different age groups
The competition is organized for students aged 8–12, 11–15, and 14–19, allowing teams to grow with the challenge and move to the next level when they are ready.
For different teams
Teams may come from primary schools, secondary schools, universities, after-school programs, or independent initiatives. Each team consists of 2–3 students and an adult coach.
Open technology choices
WRO® is not limited to one type of robotics kit. Teams may use different robotics platforms and programming languages, as long as their solution follows the technical rules of the chosen category.
Season timeline
The season at a glance
The WRO® season begins with preparation in schools and communities and culminates in the Icelandic national tournament in spring. Top teams may have the opportunity to compete at international events.
Joint equipment order
Schools and teams can take part in a joint equipment order to simplify purchasing and shipping to Iceland.
Team registration
Coaches register the number of teams, age groups, and competition categories for the national tournament.
Season theme and rules
The new season theme, challenges, and rules are published, and teams begin preparing for spring.
Icelandic national tournament
Teams from around the country meet, present their solutions, and compete for international opportunities.
European and open events
High-ranking teams may have the opportunity to participate in open international competitions.
International final
Top teams from national tournaments around the world gather for the WRO® international final.
Next national tournament
WRO® Iceland 2027
The next WRO® Iceland national tournament will take place on Saturday, 8 May 2027, at Háskólabíó in Reykjavík.
Competition categories
Choose a competition category
WRO® Iceland will initially focus on two categories: RoboMission and Future Innovators. Teams choose the category that best fits their interests, experience, and goals.
RoboMission
In RoboMission, teams design, build, and program an autonomous robot that solves tasks on a competition field. The goal is to score as many points as possible within two minutes through careful design, programming, and testing.
- For teams that want to build and program a competition robot
- Focus on precision, testing, and mission-solving
- Competition fields and tasks change between seasons
Future Innovators
In Future Innovators, teams develop a robotic prototype connected to a real-world problem. They research the topic, design a solution, build a prototype, and present their project to judges.
- For teams that want to connect technology, society, and creativity
- Focus on research, prototyping, and presentation
- The solution connects to the season theme
